Coach Branstrom is currently in his 16th year of teaching Biology and Heading up the Girls' program at Olathe Northwest.

Joel Branstrom begins his 12th year as the Raven’s head coach. Before coming to Olathe he spent 6 successful years as a teacher and a coach the boys at Lawrence High School.  In his career, Branstrom has led or assisted in 5 tournament championships (3 @ LHS/ 2 @ ONW); 3 League Championships (1 @ LHS/ 2 @ ONW); 4 state tournament appearances (1 @ LHS/ 3 @ ONW)… with a state runner-up for the Ravens in the 2011-2012 season. He was named the Sunflower League and KC Star Coach of the Year in 2012. In that same year Branstrom was awarded the prestigious Eddie Ryan Award.

Coach Branstrom has been very fortunate to play for State and National Coaches of the Year at the High School, Junior College and Division I levels respectively. Born and raised in California, he was a distinguished student-athlete at Half Moon Bay High School (located 18 miles south of San Francisco), leading the Cougars to the school's first ever league title in 1992. He moved on to become a two-year starter at Canada Junior College in Redwood City, winning a conference title. The Colts were ranked in the top 10 in in each of those two seasons. 

Coach Branstrom came to Lawrence Kansas in 1994 to fulfill a boyhood dream of playing basketball at the University of Kansas.  He made the team as walk-on his Junior and Senior seasons.  In his senior season (1996-97) the Jayhawks posted a record of 34-2 and finished the regular season ranked #1. While at KU Coach Branstrom was part of 2 Conference Championships: The Big 8 Conference (1995) and the first ever Big 12 Conference and Tournament Championship teams (1997).

Over the last 25 summers, Branstrom has worked with elementary, junior high and high school girls and boys in various basketball camps, including the Legarza & Kansas Basketball Camps. He also has coached girls golf and junior high volleyball. He brings an enthusiasm for life and the game of basketball as a player and a coach into the Lady Raven Basketball Program.

Coach Branstrom and his wife, Christiane, were married in June of 1998. They have 4 children, Jaiden(16), Noah(13), Emma(12), and Bryan (10).
